What is “Working”?

“Working”, is a Broadway musical, based on the book by Studs Terkel, “Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do” The musical is adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso, with music by Stephen Schwartz, James Taylor, and others. “Working” shares the stories and challenges of America’s workers, waitresses, business people, policemen, firemen. ironworkers, office workers, housewives, truckers, factory workers, retired workers, cleaning women, etc. Its rich, exciting musical score reinforced by real words from interviews in Mr. Terkel’s book, cut to the heart of the pride, motivation and conscientiousness that drive people to continue working every day.

Who is the Flanders Community Theater?

In July of 2006, a group of teachers, spouses, parents, musicians, artists, and administrators from the East Lyme Public School system, The Flanders Community Theater, collaborated to produce and present the Broadway musical “Godspell” by Stephen Schwartz. All proceeds, after expenses went to the Tommy Fund to support the families of children who are challenged by cancer, and more specifically Kids Cancer –Vive, a local chapter of the Tommy Fund that directly funnels funds to families in Southeastern CT.
We are pleased to report that our first endeavor was an enormous success. All three performances were completely sold out to audiences of 300 plus. Due to the support of the community, through attendance, raffles, and advertisements, we were able to donate $11,710 to Kids Cancer-Vive.

In July 2008, we will present the Broadway musical “Working” also by Stephen Schwartz at ELHS. Through this particular musical, we hope to celebrate workers, “ordinary people with extraordinary dreams” honoring our parents, grandparents, and friends, in Southeastern, CT, and in our country.
